Musicians speak different languages

Different musicians speak different languages. Guitarists speak differently than pianists.  Vocalists speak differently than drummers.  And string players speak differently than brass players.

So here’s a little glimpse into the orchestral world from this past weekend at Topeka Bible Church.  These are all the edits we made to make the songs singable (so there weren’t as many stinking repeats all over the place).

Orchestra Edits for February 14, 2010

NEW DOXOLOGY

  • – delete ms.13-14
  • – delete ms.34-35
  • – add a one measure repeat at ms. 45 (we will repeat ms.45 once)
  • – add a ritard at ms.65

  • – place a fermata at ms.66 on your whole note/rest

  • – at the end of ms.28, write in “2nd time, repeat to ms.21”
  • – turn your 1st ending into a 2nd ending as well, the repeats you entered for ms.29 and ms.30 are good both times, add a “FINE” to the end of ms.30 the final time
  • – delete ms.31 to end
  • – the band will play 4 more measures of music as an ending, the orchestra will tacet during these 4 measures

Video and music remake of a MJ 80’s tune, nicely done

Thank you to Tim Halferty for sharing this with me.  Great rendition of an old 80’s tune.

Worship Tip: Line 6 Variax + PODxt Live Guitar Rig – February 8, 2010 #sundaysetlist #sundaysetlists

Topics in this week’s worship tip & rewind video: my Line 6 Variax guitar + Line 6 PODxt Live rig. This guitar and effect unit is great for my environment, but not everyone’s environment.  Check out the video to see if something like this might suit your situation.  It’s a slick thing for me to setup all my guitar settings in advance and have the ability to switch from an acoustic guitar to a Les Paul sustained distortion to a Fender Strat thin punchy funk tone with a touch of your foot.  Shoot, if you wanted a 12 string, Sitar, or Banjo…it’s there.  Makes for extremely quick transitions without the distraction of multiple guitars, amps, knob spinning, or a display of 10+ pedals and the dance that would go with it.

AWANA Cubbies Song preview – 1 Timothy 1:15

Scott DeSanders came into my office five minutes ago and asked, “What in the world are you doing?”  Guess the walls are a little too thin.  Here’s what I was recording…a little preview of this week’s AWANA Cubbies song.

“Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” (1 Timothy 1:15)

Ooooooooh……..yeeeeeaaaaaaah.

Why I took time off the stage leading worship

For the past month, I’ve made a conscious effort to be off the stage from leading worship. I’ve had some people ask me what’s going on. So here are my top ten reasons why it was good for me to be off-stage…
1. You can help the sense that the worship experience isn’t personality-driven (by me).
2. You can meet more people in your congregation off-stage than on-stage.
3. You can get a rare glimpse by hearing and seeing what the worshippers hear and see.
4. You can sit with your son for his very first ‘big church’ experience.
5. You can help your wife with the kids, because she’s a “single-mom” the other 51 weeks of the year on Sunday morning.
6. You can develop leadership letting others lead in your place.
7. You can make sure the ministry still works, you know, just in case you get hit by a bus someday.
8. You can talk with the off-stage who supports the on-stage ministry (techs, security, ushers, recording techs, lyric operators).
9. You can learn an off-stage tech position for some cross-training (house audio, recording studio, etc.).
10. You can come back to the stage with a greater appreciation for all of the off-stage ministry that happens.
